OVC Winter Chapter Meeting
(Time's running out to register)
We're getting down to the wire. The winter meeting is only 12 days away. Join us Tuesday, January 11th at NCR Country Club in Kettering, Ohio, for a 6-hour workshop on membership and staff recruitment and retention called Let's Think Positive, an interactive workshop on sustainable practices and overcoming challenges. Click here for highlights of the workshop including bios of the speakers and to register.
Registration numbers are growing for our winter meeting. As of today, we have 50 members and guest registered and the number increases every day.
You can earn six CMI credits for this interactive workshop presented by Rick Coyne, President of Professional Club Marketing Association and Three (yes, that's really his name) & Jackie Carpenter, a dynamic duo who have recently released their latest book, "People First."
From marketing to sales to retention and onboarding, building the member experience and brand is foundational. This workshop will look at best practices to create ongoing ambassadors, retention and loyal members who proudly refer new members.
In recruitment and retention of staff, brand relevance to the employee is equally important as the brand we create for members. Three and Jackie Carpenter will dive deep into the culture required to attract and retain quality personnel, build loyalty and create a member experience everyone will be proud of.
Even though most clubs are doing great in membership recruitment, this is not the time to become complacent. Many factors are looming that will likely reshape the way in which clubs think and operate. From marketing to communicating with your members, this workshop will reveal areas of concern as well as best practices to keep members engaged and staff happy in a culture of mutual respect and understanding.
Although this workshop is for everyone, if you are a relatively new club manager or membership director (within the last couple of years,) you really should attend. You will take away dozens of ideas that you can implement immediately after getting back to your club.
At each chapter meeting, we choose one charitable organization to support. For this meeting, we have chosen the Artemis Center in Dayton. The Artemis Center is Dayton's domestic violence resource agency. They empower survivors of domestic violence to make decisions and choices that will establish and maintain safety for themselves and their children.
The Artemis Center suggested food (non-refrigerated,) small appliances (toasters, mixers, etc.,) cleaning supplies, or gift cards for groceries and/or gas.
Please help us support this very worthy charitable agency. Bring items to the meeting. We'll have a table set up for you to drop off your donations
Welcome our New Members

There's still time to win the annual recruitment contest sponsored by CMAA. We're still in second place in the large chapter category and need only two members to join to take the big prize. First place is a $2,000 education grant that we could really use. The contest ends at 5:00 p.m. this next Friday, December 31st. If you've been putting off signing up one of your assistants, now is the time to do it.
Point them to www.cmaa.org/join. The whole process will only take about 10 minutes and they'll be in within 24 hours!
We have now welcomed 37 new members so far in 2021 against our CMAA Recruitment Goal of 18 (six transferred into the OVC and don't count against our goal. Broken down by district, we've welcomed:
Long-Standing Members Recognized in 2021
The continued active participation of each Association member is key to CMAA’s future. Years ago, the CMAA Board of Directors established a Longevity Program to show their appreciation for the ongoing commitment of the men and women who have been members of the Association for 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, or 60 years. Each year, members who reach these milestones are presented with a custom-designed pin acknowledging their years of continued support.
The following OVC members reached these milestones. If I missed any of our chapter members, I apologize. Please let me know.
Mr. Michael Kaido
Mr. Nick Longo
Mr. Michael J. Methot, CCM
Mr. Jamie Barta, CCM
Mr. Joseph P. LaRocca (?)
Mr. Philip Zwierzchowski, CCM
Mr. William P. Rothballer, CCM, CCE
Mr. Richard Thurston, CCM
Mr. Thomas R. Curtin
Mr. William H. Diehl, CCM
For a full list of all CMAA members who reached these milestone, click here.
I add new open positions to our Career Opportunities page just about every week. If you think you may be interested in making a move, check here first.
You can review CMAA's Management Openings List (MOL) here, and the Mid-Management Career Opportunities List here.
I saw a lot of comments to a question from one of our members about the ownership of your golf shop. Although the questioner received some great answers, I think there was a better method that could have been used to ask the question.
Several years ago, we partnered with a company called Group Valet. Their website allows us to post questions to everyone in the chapter by simply typing the question and hitting send.
The best part of this is that questions and answers are archived and fully searchable. You can find questions that have already been asked and answered on just about every topic relating to clubs.
Using the website is simple. As a matter fact, you're already listed on the site. If you haven't already set up your password, go to https://grpvlt.co/password..
Please let me know if you have any problems or questions.
Items of Interest
Kevin Rice, Louisville District Director, has arranged for OVC members and staff to attend an Executive Bourbon Steward course in Louisville on Monday, April 18, 2022.
In part, the objectives include strengthening participants' skills in guiding their staff in various aspects of bourbon stewardship and member relations. The goal is to help you develop and expand in-house bourbon programs, and build bourbon lists to grow your sales.
If you're interested for yourself or someone on your staff, block out Monday, April 18th on your calendar now. We'll have registration open soon with all the details. Click here to see the flyer.
RESOURCES AND SUPPORT
Concerned About Tax Laws?
Most club General Managers must disclose salary on IRS Form 990. That's the headline on a recent newsletter from one of the chapter's good friends and frequent speaker to the OVC, Mitch Stump.
We all know how complicated the tax rules are when it comes to 501(c)(7) clubs. It's actually scary the number of things we know we're supposed to do at our club, but we don't do them. We ride along assuming that the tax man won't be coming around to our club.
And that's been true for quite a while now. The IRS has been terribly underfunded for quite a few years now, especially for audit agents. But, that may be changing before long. There's lots of noise in Congress right now to fix that underfunded problem.
If you click here, you can read a little about that headline above and read a few other things that Mitch had to say in his October newsletter.
Incidentally, Mitch will be one of our speakers at the spring meeting, March 14th in Indianapolis. Mark your calendar now.
As we look forward to the spring meeting in Indianapolis on March 14th, we're giving attention to all matters relating to legislative issues, compliance with your club's 501(c)(7) status , and building stronger Boards of Directors.
